A unique class of vertebrate immunoglobulins is now commercially available at preclinics GmbH, Potsdam/Germany. In addition to the custom immunization of New World camelids (llamas, alpacas) preclinics offers its first purified antibodies. Appropriate secondary antibodies are offered as well.
Camelid antibodies, which preclinics names CAMAB™, consist of different subtypes. The conventional vertebrate antibody is IgG1 and consists of two heavy and two light chains. Additionally, all camelids have antibodies devoid of light chains. IgG2 and IgG3 are therefore called heavy chain-antibodies. They were firstly described by Hamers-Casterman et al. in 1993 (Nature). The missing light chain is compensated by a modified paratope structure. Prolonged and protruding loops of the complementarity determining regions give rise to non-canonical structures and thus expand the antigen binding repertoire of CAMAB™.
In contrast to nanobodies, CAMAB™ can also be used in common immunoassays. Several secondary antibodies are available at preclinics for such purposes.
